Background to the PROMiSe study

Public health research studies use a quality of life questionnaire, known as EQ-5D-5L to assess how well the participant (or patient) has responded to the treatment or intervention being studied.

This questionnaire is usually completed on paper by patients when they attend their GP or hospital clinics. This can be a burden for patients who have to spend time travelling to the appointment, and it also takes up NHS resources, such as clinic space and staff time. After completing the form, the process then requires a member of staff to enter the information collected onto a database while at the same time checking for any errors.

Why is PROMiSe needed?

Using a questionnaire to see how well the study is meeting the needs of the patients in it is a vital part of the research, but as outlined above currently takes a lot of time and NHS resources.

The PROMiSe study is designed to see if this vital information can be captured just as well, or better, by doing it online. During the study we will see if this online information collection is acceptable to patients and if they are able to successfully complete the forms online.

Finally, we want to find out if individuals are willing to have their survey data linked to their NHS records and also if they know their NHS number. This part of the study is optional, and the study team will not be looking at anyone's NHS record.

What can being involved in PROMiSe help us to achieve?

By being involved in this study, we hope to improve future research by making it easier for patients to take part and more affordable for the NHS.

How can you be involved in PROMiSe?

If you'd like to take part, you will be asked to complete online an EQ-5D-5L questionnaire every 2 weeks for up to 6 months. It is composed of 5 questions and should only take a few minutes to complete. You will be sent an email with a link to the survey and asked to complete this online using your own computer or portable electronic device (laptop, tablet, phone etc).

You will also be asked to complete a short survey asking you about how you found completing the questionnaire and how we could improve the system for future studies. This survey will be composed of 2 parts & 10-15 questions. You will be asked to complete this at the beginning, after 3 months and again at the end of 6 months. It will only take an extra few minutes of your time.

You will be reimbursed for your time and efforts at the end of the 6 month survey period with a £10 voucher.

What happens at the end of the study?

This study will take a year to complete, after which we will email you to share our findings. The EQ-5D-5L quality of
life results and any personal information about you will not be published. However, we will share information about how well the online forms were completed and how easy you and other study participants found them, and we will share this with other researchers. We'll also aim to publish the results of the study in a scientific journal.
