Bowel & Cancer Research is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal information about people who use are website, how we use it, the conditions under which we may disclose it to others and how we keep it safe.

The type of information we hold about you

Personal data, or personal information, means any information about an individual from which that person can be identified. It does not include data where the identity has been removed (anonymous data).

The personal information we collect might include name, address, email address, IP address and information regarding what pages are accessed and when.

How is your personal information collected?

We obtain information about you when you use our website, for instance when you look at our research, apply for a research grant, make a donation, support a fundraiser or register for our newsletter.

How is your information used?

We will only use your personal information when the law allows us to. We may use your information to:

  • Process a donation that you have made
  • Carry out obligations arising from contracts entered into by you or us
  • Process a grant application
  • Send you communications which you have requested and that may be of interest to you, these could include information on appeals, campaigns, fundraising, research and events
  • Administer a request from you to join a clinical trial or our patient involvement group, People and Research Together
  • Notify you of changes to our services
  • To seek your view on our research or services provided

Retention Periods

We perform regular reviews of personal information held. Some information we are legally required to hold to fulfil statutory obligations (such as gift aid collection). We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity, or as long as is set out in any relevant contract you hold with us. Once data is recognised as no longer necessary we will securely remove your data from our systems.


Because of the design of our website and the fact that the platform is administered through Raising IT, our site uses cookies as standard in common with Raising IT’s other charity sites. However, we do not collate, analyse or otherwise make use of any data generated through this function. Should this situation change in the future we will update this policy to reflect any changes.

3rd Parties

We do not share your data with 3rd parties unless instructed to do so by yourself. We will not sell or rent your information, nor will we share your information with third parties for marketing purposes.

If you make a donation online or purchase a product your card information is not held by us. It is collected by our third party payment processors, who specialise in the secure online capture and processing of credit/debit cards. We use a 3rd party provider, Mailchimp, to carry out our email communications with individual subscribers. Personal data provided by you is stored securely and password protected within the Mailchimp system. To find out more about how Mailchimp handle personal data, you can view its privacy policy at


If you do not wish to be in email contact with us or your data to be held in the Mailchimp system you can unsubscribe at any time, at which point your data will be removed.

Your choice to communicate with us

We use a policy of opting in communication and our website is fully compliant with this. We will only contact you if you have given your prior consent and this will be clear on the form on which we collect your information. We will acknowledge receipt of donations as good practice for your records.

Access and update your information

The accuracy of your information is important to us. Security precautions in place at Bowel & Cancer Research

We take steps to ensure that your data is treated securely and strive to protect your personal information as much as we can. We cannot however guarantee the security of the internet that you provide your data over and you do so at your own risk.

We perform regular training with our staff to keep them up to date with data security and make our best effort to ensure all information provided to us is kept as securely as possible on our systems. We use passwords to access our network and subsequent folders to add an additional level of protection to your information.
