A group of scientists are taking a break from research and gearing up for a 10k sponsored run to support us – to give something back.

Dr Ewan St John Smith and five colleagues have signed up for the Bonfire Run in Cambridgeshire on November 4. They will also be fundraising for Versus Arthritis.

“The two charities have been supporting my group’s research work so it seems only fair that we try and give something back,” said Ewan, 37, Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge.

With him on November 4 will be colleagues Dr Jim Hockley, Dr Gerard Callejo, Dr Mar Puigdellívol, Luke Pattison and Becky Rickman.

All are ‘pretty fit’ and reckon they’ll be able to manage 10k without too much difficulty.

Ewan’s one-year research project, funded by Bowel & Cancer Research, centres around trying to work out why certain drugs used to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome produce the side-effects that they do.

“Both Bowel & Cancer Research and Versus Arthritis have done tremendous amounts to further our understanding of conditions that affect millions in the UK, as well as influencing government policy and providing support to those in need (both patients and carers),” he said.

Thank you team for your support! Bowel & Cancer Research funds the best science nationally, shining a light on new ideas and supporting the experts of the future through a dedicated PhD studentship programme. We cannot fund that research without the help of our fantastic fundraisers. It’s great to see this group of scientists saying ‘thanks’ in such a practical way.
