Martine Gabbitass Finance Manager Expand I started working for Bowel & Cancer Research back in 2009 as the Finance Manager alongside Deborah Gilbert. In my time I have seen the income grow from under £300k to just over £900k and the team develop from the 2 of us to a team of 5. Heavily reliant on Trust income in the early days we now have a wide reaching income strategy. I qualified as an accountant some years ago having studied part time whilst working full time - never one to take the easy route. I come from a mainly commercial background having worked for leading technology companies with my previous role as Financial Controller at Watford Football Club, being the first non tech company I had worked for. It was during my time here that I first started to work within the third sector as my role oversaw the finances for Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust. Finding the work and its impact far more satisfying than making profit for shareholders, on my redundancy in 2008 I took the conscious decision to focus my career within the charity sector with the impetus on job satisfaction, rather than pushing for more personal rewards. The research the charity supports is invaluable and ground breaking and to be part of the mechanics behind it is very rewarding. Our supporters, both fundraisers and those that offer support in ways such as patient involvement, always go further than you would ever expect to ensure that we continue to grow and support more and more research.
