A golf club, based in Grantham, have raised an amazing £3,250 for Bowel & Cancer Research in honour of their member, Mags.

David Toule, the 2018 Captain of the Seniors Section of the Belton Woods Golf Club, chose Bowel & Cancer Research as their charity of the year.

Mags Turrell, wife of the Seniors’ Social Secretary Philip Turrell, was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2015. This led to almost a year in hospital when Mags’ life hung in the balance.

David said, “Phil didn’t play much golf whilst Mags was ill but he did so much as social secretary. I chose Bowel & Cancer Research in recognition of everything he’s done and all they’ve been through.”

Fundraising events have taken place throughout the year. Belton Woods Golf Club held a very successful Captain’s Away-day to Melton Mowbray and a Captain’s day at Belton Woods. One member donated a hamper which made more than £100 at auction.

Our Regional Development Coordinator, Maria Luisa Addarii accepted the cheque on behalf of the club at the Captain’s farewell dinner, attended by 80 people.

Maria said, “It was great to see that Mags Turrell is on the road to recovery. It is our charity’s mission to fund the best research so that in future people affected by bowel disease won’t have to go through what Mags did, and we can only do that with the help of our fantastic fundraisers.”
