Michael is a Bowel & Cancer Research funded PhD student working in the National Bowel Research Centre. During his time investigating the causes of pain in Ulcerative Colitis he was awarded a Best Young Investigator award in 2013 from the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

The study on pain in IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease) under the supervision of Dr David Bulmer recorded the first ever recording of pain receptors in the human gut and gone on to further detail how these function in the gut in health and disease.

Without Bowel & Cancer Research funding, this study would not have gone past the early stages of conception.

This study made a significant contribution to a body of work that aims to deliver a more effective treatment for pain for individuals who live with Inflammatory Bowel Disease within the next 5 - 10 years.
