The results of our Big Bowel Survey 2014 have were published in the International Journal of Surgery. The survey, completed by more than 1,700 individuals across the UK, examined public perception of lifestyle risk factors associated with bowel cancer and the awareness of bowel cancer screening. Congratulations to Kathryn Lynes (she of University Challenge #sphincterpreservation fame) for leading on the write up. The results in brief:

  • Awareness of lifestyle risk factors for CRC is affected by age and educational level.
  • Initiatives are required to improve awareness of younger people since this group stand to benefit most from risk reduction.
  • 45% were unaware that CRC is curable if caught early; screening promotion should focus on this message.
