J van WeenanMBEAwarded his black belt in Australia, Mr van Weenen is now one of Britain's most experienced Shotokan Karate instructors. But it was the death from colorectal cancer of his friend and long-time training associate, Eddie Whitcher, that compelled him to raise a large amount of money 'for further research into large bowel cancer'. And thus, in 1990, the Trust was born. Awarded MBE for his charitable work in Albania where he has arranged for doctors to perform eye surgery on orphaned Albanian children, he transported £8 million of humanitarian aid there and also set up the British Children's Library. This and other stories about him were portrayed on an edition of the BBC's 'This is your Life'. In a letter to him, Prince Charles wrote: 'It is extraordinary what one man can do with real determination and courage'. |
